Each summer my family—along with the help of many generous friends and colleagues—provide backpacks stuffed with school supplies to homeless and low-income children in Santa Cruz County.
It all started when my sons wanted new backpacks for school even though their current backpacks were still in fine shape. When I mentioned this fact to them, one of the boys and I can’t remember which one, suggested that we could donate the older backpacks to the homeless shelter. We then discussed the possibility of filling up the donated backpacks with the same school supplies I buy for the them.
When I mentioned what we had done to a few friends, they told me to contact them next year if we did it again—because they wanted to participate. So that next summer I contacted my friends who offered a combination of backpacks and money to help fill them.
And that is how our project was born!
